The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, denounced hostile actions by the government of Trinidad and Tobago, describing as “delusional” the statements of his prime minister, who allegedly threatened to authorize attacks against Venezuela from his territory.

“She has gone crazy, threatening to authorize attacks against Venezuela from Trinidad and Tobago, almost declaring war. Never has a Trinidadian ruler done anything like that,” said Maduro during a press conference with international media.

He recalled the historic ties between the two Caribbean nations. “Long before, we were one community. Life in the Caribbean seas has been one of cooperation and brotherhood”, while calling for peace in the region.

The president warned that Venezuela will not allow unauthorized incursions into its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and denounced that U.S. ships have repeatedly violated international law in this area.

“The only one that systematically violates international laws on the passage of ships through the EEZ is the United States, not only with Venezuela, but with several countries on the continent,” he said.

He denounced the recent incident in which a Venezuelan fishing boat was held up by 18 armed U.S. marines for eight hours in Venezuelan waters. “It was a kidnapping on the high seas. They were looking for an incident that would go from minor to larger scale,” he reported.
