The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, received this Monday at the Miraflores Palace, in Caracas, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, to strengthen relations within the framework of the positive complementarity established in the Rome Statute.

According to information from the Presidential Press, this meeting constitutes the official 's fourth visit to Venezuela, after the work agenda he held in November 2021, March 2022 and June 2023, which reaffirms the principle of constructive dialogue, as well as Khan's willingness to meet in situ with the Venezuelan authorities.

As a result of the visits of the ICC Prosecutor, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed, allowing the search for truth and justice through cooperation, positive complementarity, mutual support and constructive dialogue, an action described by the Venezuelan head of state as a favorable step.

“We have achieved a great consensus and I think it has been a favorable consensus. Venezuela is a country where we set great goals in the construction of an alternative, different State where the people are the protagonists of their own development,” he once said.

Later, in March 2022, the opening of an office of the ICC Prosecutor's Office in Caracas was made official to deepen effective dialogue and technical assistance with Venezuela, an action that, according to Khan, facilitates “the fulfillment of my responsibilities in accordance with the Rome Statute.”

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the ICC has special advisors in Venezuela “who can provide technical assistance to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, deepen and strengthen our alliances, as well as identify different areas at the institutional level”, not only to guarantee the approval of laws, but their full execution and application.
