The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, denounced this Monday to international media the violation of international law by the United States government following the arrest of a Venezuelan tuna boat in waters under national jurisdiction by the US military.

“The only country that systematically violates international laws regarding the passage of ships through the continent's exclusive economic zones is the United States. Not only with Venezuela, but with several Latin American countries,” said the president.

President Maduro explained that the Venezuelan ship was threatened by radio and later approached by a group of 18 U.S. marines, specialized in missile systems, who held the fishermen captive for eight hours at sea. “It was an armed assault on a group of seafarers, in the middle of the Venezuelan exclusive economic zone. An embarrassment to the international community and to the military honor of American forces,” he said.

He warned that this type of action sought to escalate into a major military incident, as has happened at other times in history. “They are looking for an incident. They did it in Cuba with the ship Maine, in Vietnam with the Gulf of Tonkin, and in Panama with the excuse of two dead soldiers. Here they tried the same thing,” he said.

Finally, the Head of State sent a message of support to Venezuelan fishermen: “Let's continue at work, fishing for healthy tuna, not genetically modified or contaminated with mercury. May the fishing sector continue to grow as the entire Venezuelan economy grows.”
