Colombian President Gustavo Petro once again expressed his disagreement with any form of foreign intervention in Venezuela, in response to recent statements by opposition sectors and the movement of military forces in the region.

On his account on the social network X, he published a message about the US military deployment in the Caribbean, he defended the principle of self-determination of Peoples.

President Petro said: “To be an opponent, you don't have to be stateless. No Latin American citizen should want either the invasion of their own country or the invasion of any other. This democratic principle is called self-determination of Peoples.”

The statement came amid tensions generated by the deployment of U.S. military forces in the southern Caribbean Sea, on the grounds of combating drug trafficking. The Bolivarian Government interprets this action as a threat to its sovereignty.

In this regard, the President reiterated that issues in the region must be resolved between Latin Americans and the Caribbean, without external interference, and stressed the importance of respecting territorial sovereignty as a basis for democratic coexistence.

In another message, the Colombian president stressed that “neither Colombia nor the Venezuelan opposition in Venezuela, nor any self-respecting Latin American, should neither request nor rejoice in a foreign invasion of our soil.”

He emphasized that “the problems of Latin Americans and the Caribbean are solved by Latin Americans and the Caribbean.”

“With Europe or with North America or with China or Africa, we talk about our common problems face to face and as humans, not as servants,” he said.
