The president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, reported this Tuesday that more than 6,400 people have been rescued in the state of La Guaira since last June 24, when two strong earthquakes were recorded in the country.

During the daily assessment of the tragedy, Rodríguez indicated that at the time of the earthquakes, there were approximately 30,000 people in Caraballeda and Catia La Mar, the most affected areas of the state, between vacationers and residents.

“In the first moments after the emergency, the calculation, which we made based on surveys with people, with family members, with those treated in triages, with those treated in hospitals directly, indicates that approximately 13,400 to 13,500 people managed to leave the disaster area on their own feet or helped by their families,” he explained.

He added that in the first two days, the rescues were carried out by Venezuelan rescuers from Civil Protection, Firefighters, Police and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces “and by the family members who collaborated in the process of rescuing loved ones because they knew exactly where they were.”

“On the first day, 2407 people were rescued in La Guaira and especially in the two disaster zones (...) On the second day, when rescue personnel from all over the national territory were incorporated, we counted 2973 people rescued, and in many of the rescues, many of the rescues were also there in those first two days collaborating and working with many family members and many volunteers in the rescue processes,” he said.

Rodríguez indicated that on the third day 731 people were rescued, on the fourth day 345 people, on the fifth day four people and today a 2-year-old baby, which “makes a total of 6,461 people rescued since the same day of the emergency of the two earthquakes.”

Adding the 6461 people who were rescued “by our teams, by international brigades, by volunteers, by families”, to the more than 13,400 people who were able to leave on their own or helped by friends and family, “we can number 19861 people who saved their lives in La Guaira in those terrible besieged hours of the two earthquakes,” said the head of Parliament.
