The permanent representative of Russia to the United Nations (UN), Vasili Nebenzia, declared this Thursday, July 17, at a meeting of the Security Council, that Moscow had warned both of the possibility of an escalation in Syria and of the potential increase in marginalization and social division.

“We are very concerned about what is happening in Syria, we have historic ties of friendship and cooperation with the brotherly Syrian people, and we support them with our hearts,” he said in a review published by the Russia Today portal.

He noted that “the images that circulate in the media and on social networks of brutal massacres of defenseless people at the hands of armed gangs that are sweeping away because of their impunity are shocking and bring to mind the tragic events in western Syria, which raised many questions [...] The silence of the international community in the face of such a situation is unacceptable.”

Nebenzia also analyzed how the “fight against the supporters of the old regime” divides Syrian society.

“References to the alleged 'fight against the remnants of the regime' or to the 'confrontation with pro-Assad elements' (in reference to former President Bashar al Assad) by some representatives of the Syrian and foreign leaders cannot serve to cover up the persecution of religious and national minorities and ethnic-religious cleansing,” Nebenzia denounced.

The Russian representative warned that despite allegations that a number of dangerous armed groups have disbanded, “in reality, many of them have retained their autonomy and have become part of the current escalation.”

“It is especially worrying that foreign terrorist fighters continue to be present in the ranks of security forces aimed at ensuring the safety of the population, including ethnic-religious minorities. There is ample evidence that they are not Syrian citizens and often openly associate with or sympathize with the Islamic State*,” he said.
