The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, expressed his support for the Venezuelan people in the face of the sanctions, threats and external pressures facing the nation.

During his speech in the general debate of the 80th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), the Russian diplomat described these actions as violations of sovereignty. “This is a blatant example of how sovereignty is violated and intervened in the internal affairs of a nation.”

Lavrov, as reported by Venezolana de Televisión, stressed that Latin America and the Caribbean represent a zone of peace and cooperation, and reiterated his solidarity with the peoples of Cuba and Venezuela, subject to unilateral coercive measures. In this context, he criticized the sanctions policy promoted by Washington and denounced the constant threat of aggression against sovereign states.

The Russian Foreign Minister warned about the situation in Palestine, warning that there is an attempt at a “coup d'etat” against the historic UN decision that established the creation of a Palestinian state. He stressed the urgency of taking concrete measures to prevent that people from running out of territory to recognize.

In connection with the conflict in Ukraine, Lavrov accused Europe of allowing terrorist attacks, extrajudicial executions and sabotage. He noted that these actions respond to what he called “the Western obsession to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.” However, he assured that Moscow is keeping diplomatic channels open to address the root causes of the conflict.

On arms control, Lavrov recalled President Vladimir Putin's proposal to maintain restrictions within the framework of the New START Treaty, with the aim of avoiding a new strategic race. He indicated that Moscow “has certain hopes” that dialogue with the United States will contribute to resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

The chancellor also denounced what he considers to be a systematic practice of violating the principle of sovereign equality of States. He stated that the West divides the world into blocks of “democracies” and “autocracies”, or under the metaphor of a “blossoming garden” in front of a “jungle”. In his view, these divisions generate crises, deepen conflicts and weaken trust in international justice.
