At an event held at the San Cristóbal passenger terminal, authorities from the state of Táchira, together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an organization of the United Nations System, laid the first stone for the construction of the first Mobility Care Point for Migrants in Venezuela.

The event was led by Governor Freddy Bernal and the mayor of San Cristóbal, Silfredo Zambrano, who highlighted the pioneering nature of the project, which will consolidate the first permanent office for migrant care in the country.

The Care Point will be ready in approximately 60 days and will have two modules: one aimed at caring for vulnerable people, such as those returning to the country, and another focused on the comprehensive protection system for children and adolescents.

“About 25,000 people move through this terminal every month, of whom about 2,500 are minors who are susceptible to special protection,” he added.

The IOM collaborator, Alex Rigol, stressed that the objective is to provide decent, safe and comprehensive care to those who transit through San Cristóbal.

The new infrastructure will provide temporary accommodation for up to 12 people, basic food, hygiene supplies and channeling to the protection system for managing legal and travel documents. In addition, it will become a key point in the fight against human trafficking, by strengthening prevention and control mechanisms at the border.
