Senator Iván Cepeda, a key figure in the investigations against the former president of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, filed a criminal action in the Public Prosecutor's Office against the former president, his two sons and the director of the Democratic Center party, reported the Russia Today website.
The accusatory document indicates alleged responsibility for crimes of aggravated slander, aggravated insult, aggravated harassment and threats, based on what it calls a systematic campaign of persecution and defamation deployed through social networks, media and international campaigns that falsely attribute punishable conduct to them.
In a statement, Senator Cepeda and other whistleblowers claim that Uribe and his allies linked them to terrorist and drug trafficking organizations.
“In a reckless way, they have falsely accused Iván Cepeda Castro of 'top political leader of FARC', 'the Perfect Comrade of the FARC', 'political determinator of drug trafficking', among other mendacious and slanderous allegations, which are intended to affect his reputation, putting his security at high risk,” the text states.
Cepeda argues that this defamatory offensive has violated the “moral integrity” and the rights to life and personal integrity of the “gang of victims” of the criminal proceedings against the former president. The complaint seeks that the Public Prosecutor's Office investigate and establish criminal liability.
The announcement comes after the trial ruling that found Uribe guilty of procedural fraud and bribery in criminal proceedings, a historic result that made him the first former Colombian president to be criminally convicted.
