From Madrid, Spain, the fugitive from
Venezuelan justice, Leopoldo López, re-escalated his interventionist rhetoric by publicly
declaring that he “would welcome a U.S. attack on Venezuelan soil.”
These statements, made in an interview with the EFE
agency, not only represent an explicit call for foreign aggression,
but they also demonstrate the disconnection of sectors of the radical opposition with the
interests of the Venezuelan people and demonstrate their subordination to North American imperialism.
López, convicted in 2015 for inciting violence during
the guarimbas that left dozens dead, insisted that the “pressure”
exerted by the United States (US), including the military deployment in the
Caribbean that has already cost the lives of more than 30 civilians, must be intensified
through “objectives within the national territory”.
With these words, the extremist opposition legitimizes a policy of hostility that has historically served to justify invasions and coups d'etat in the region under false pretexts, such as the fictitious “fight against drug trafficking”. In addition, in the interview, he promotes the idea of an “internal uprising”, omitting any mention of his participation in the coup attempt of April 30, 2019, which failed in the face of the loyalty of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and the popular rejection of destabilizing violence.
The Venezuelan government has repeatedly denounced
that these types of pronouncements are part of a narrative aimed at
endorsing foreign intervention disguised as a “democratic transition”, but
which in reality responds to economic and geopolitical interests outside national sovereignty.
While López and other extremist leaders reside
abroad, it is the People who face the
consequences of an illegal blockade and a media war aimed at
undermining self-determination.
