In place of Ramón Santos, who applied for his retirement, the Government of Spain appointed Álvaro Albacete this Tuesday as the new ambassador of the European country to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the midst of diplomatic tensions that the European country insists on maintaining.

After the resounding victory of President Nicolás Maduro in the presidential elections of July 28 in Venezuela, the Government of Pedro Sánchez decided to grant political asylum to the extremist Edmundo González Urrutia, an opposition candidate who was the loser in the above-mentioned elections.

In addition, this appointment occurs despite Madrid's refusal to recognize the re-election of the Venezuelan Head of State, who would be responsible for receiving the credentials of the new head of the Spanish Diplomatic Mission in Caracas.

According to international media reports, Albacete is a career diplomat and recently held the position of chief of staff of the Spanish Minister of Culture. Previously, he served as Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), where he was in charge of issues related to Environment, Blue Economy, Water and Higher Education and Research.
