Between May 16 and July 13, 2025, at least 1,180 deaths related to high temperatures were recorded in different regions of Spain, according to official data released by La Moncloa.

Deaths increased by 47% during the first week of July compared to the total for the month of June. Of the total number of cases, 95% were people over 65 years of age, and 59% were women.

Galicia, La Rioja, Asturias and Cantabria are the autonomous communities most vulnerable to these episodes, which could be associated with low levels of structural and social adaptation to extreme thermal phenomena.

According to what was published on the Sputnik web portal, between May and July, 76 red level alerts were activated due to intense heat, the maximum within the weather monitoring system. In the same period in 2024, no such warnings were issued.

The average temperatures in June reached 23.6ºC, exceeding the historic record of 2017 and the average recorded between 1991 and 2020. July is expected to maintain values above historic averages at the national level.
