Armed violence in southern Syria killed more than 1,000 people last week, according to figures from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The conflict includes attacks by Bedouin and Druze groups, state troops, tribal militias and the Israeli army.
The casualties included 336 Druze fighters, 342 government soldiers and 298 members of the Druze community linked to the conflict, 194 of whom died at the hands of government forces. In addition, 21 Sunni Bedouins, including three civilians, and 15 members of the Syrian army were killed in air strikes directed against Israel.
According to what was published on the Sputnik website, the clashes began with armed attacks on Druze villages in Al Suwayda, as well as with a blockade of the Damascus highway. Druze forces repelled the attack, which also faced military units sent by the transitional government. In response, Israel launched an attack in the Syrian capital.
The interim ceasefire agreement signed on Wednesday is still in effect.
