This Thursday, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, confirmed that after a call with her counterpart from the United States (USA), Donald Trump, she managed to stop the tariff increase scheduled to take effect on Friday on key products. The agreement provides 90 days for negotiating a long-term trade understanding.

“We had a very good call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump; we avoided the increase in tariffs announced for tomorrow and managed 90 days to build a long-term agreement based on dialogue,” Sheinbaum reported on social networks.

Likewise, the president stressed that the result is the product of direct diplomacy and the coordination of her economic and diplomatic team.

During the conversation, the president was accompanied by Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard and Undersecretary for North America Roberto Velasco.

According to Telesur, the central objective is to stop the tariff escalation that could directly affect strategic sectors of the Mexican economy, from the automotive industry to the metallurgical industry.

The extension prevents an immediate increase in tariffs on Mexican exports starting this August 1. According to the president, the commitment made is to use the next three months to build a long-term trade agenda that provides certainty to producers and exporters in the Aztec nation.
