The U.S. government denied having an investigation into Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's alleged links to organized crime.
“As I think the Department of Justice has made clear, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is not being investigated ,” said White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby.
“It would be the State Department's responsibility to review any allegations. For my part, I refer them to the Department of Justice for follow-up,” Kirby added during his meeting with the media reported by the Sputnik portal.
This Thursday, February 22, the Mexican head of state announced that the American newspaper The New York Times would publish a report based on an investigation by the US authorities that indicates that people close to the president, including his older children, received money from organized crime during his 2018 presidential campaign.
But, according to the president, the media in the North American country not only notified the presidential spokesperson who was preparing the report, but also gave him an ultimatum to answer a questionnaire about the investigation.
