The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the end of the international monkey pox emergency.

The director general of the institution, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, stated that the disease no longer represents a threat to global health.

In a post on his X social media profile, Gebreyesus recalled that the alert had been issued more than a year ago, on the recommendation of the Emergency Committee. The technical group itself decided to lift the measure after evaluating the evolution of the epidemic.

The decision responds to the constant reduction in infections and deaths in countries such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone and Uganda, as well as to advances in knowledge of the transmission mechanisms and the factors that favor the spread of the virus.

As of February 23, 2025, the WHO has registered 127,905 confirmed diagnoses and 283 deaths in more than 100 territories.
