The church authorities of Caracas announced the holding of 12 masses this Holy Wednesday in the Basilica of Saint Teresa, with the purpose of facilitating the participation of the faithful in the veneration of the Nazarene of Saint Paul, one of the most emblematic religious traditions in the country.
The liturgical day will begin at midnight and will last throughout the day, with a central Eucharist scheduled for 5:00 in the afternoon in Diego Ibarra Square, followed by the traditional procession that runs through the streets of downtown Caracas every year.
The Nazarene of São Paulo is one of the most deeply rooted manifestations of faith in Venezuela, bringing together thousands of devotees who come dressed in purple to pay promises and raise demands for health and well-being.
This tradition has its origin in the so-called “Lemon Tree of the Lord”, an event that occurred in 1696, when, according to popular belief, the image was taken out in procession during an epidemic and was credited with healing the sick, thus consolidating his deep devotion in the Venezuelan capital.
