Despite having been moved and refounded seven times, which is why it is called a portable city, it was taken on October 9, 1557 as the first date of its foundation, by Captain Diego García de Paredes.

Trujillo is the first city to be founded in the Andes Mountains. García Paredes named it Nueva Trujillo in memory of the city of Trujillo de Extremadura, his native place in Spain; he appointed the authorities and assigned the first orders; the site was also chosen for the headquarters of the Cabildo and where the church should be built, Ephemerides Venezolanas reported.

It is located 800 meters above sea level and has the highest monument in America, such as the Peace Monument, a representation of the Virgin Mary that is 46.72 meters high and is 1,600 meters above sea level.

This city was the scene of momentous events such as the War to the Death Decree drafted by the Liberator Simon Bolivar on June 15, 1813 during the Admirable Campaign, a heroic feat in which Bolívar freed the provinces of Barinas, Caracas, Mérida and Trujillo.

Trujillo still retains that colonial and old-fashioned touch in its streets and facades, which envelops locals and visitors in a pleasant atmosphere of tranquility that recalls past times, which is why it has also been given the name of the City of Peace and Enchantment.
