The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake and so far no casualties or major damage have been reported since the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces, including Bursa, Yalova and Tekirdag.

The Istanbul governor's office reported that 12 people sought help for panic attacks and another five were treated for sprains caused by panic, reported the Al-Monitor portal.

AFAD and all relevant institutions have started field inspections,” Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya wrote in X.

The earthquake had its epicenter in the south of the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Marmaraereglisi in Tekirdag, at 14:55 local time, according to AFAD.

The Kandilli Observatory and the Istanbul Earthquake Research Institute estimated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 and that the epicenter was at a depth of about 12 kilometers (7 miles).

No casualties have been reported at the time of this publication, but CCTV images showed residents of the affected provinces leaving the buildings in a panic.

Primary and secondary schools were evacuated in Marmaraereglisi, the private news agency Demiroren reported.

Air traffic at Istanbul airports was briefly stopped to allow runways to be inspected, according to Demiroren.

Located on a series of geological faults, Turkey frequently experiences deadly earthquakes. Recently, more than 50,000 people died in twin earthquakes, both of magnitude greater than 7, that struck southeastern Turkey on February 6, 2023 and affected 11 provinces.
