The Human Rights Office of the United Nations (UN) stated that any action by a State to combat drug trafficking must respect international law.
The statement by Ravina Shamdasani, UN human rights spokesperson, relates to the alleged attack launched this week by the United States (USA) against a vessel that supposedly belonged to the criminal organization Tren de Aragua and that apparently crossed the Caribbean Sea.
Shamdasani said that action cannot justify murder. “As for drug-related crimes, just to be clear, people should not be killed for using, trafficking, selling or possessing drugs,” he said.
For its part, the U.S. Department of Defense, threateningly asserted that this is the beginning of a campaign against drug cartels that, according to information created by the North American State, are controlled by the Venezuelan government.
The UN spokeswoman added that the fight against drug trafficking must not escape the principles of legality and that officials are responsible for complying with them.
