Experts from the United Nations (UN) called for an immediate, comprehensive and independent investigation into the murder of journalists Fatima Fatouni, Mohammed Fatouni and Ali Choeib, in southern Lebanon.

In a joint statement, they considered the death of the three journalists a flagrant attack on press freedom and condemned the recurrent practice of attacking journalists and then justifying actions without credible evidence.

The journalists were killed on March 28 in a series of attacks on their vehicle, while they were traveling in the city of Jezzine in the line of their work.

According to experts, journalists in armed conflict are civilians and should not be the target of attacks. The deliberate killing of journalists who do not participate in hostilities constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime, they said.
