The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed strong condemnation of the recent decision of the Israeli government to authorize the construction of 34 new settlements in the occupied territory of the West Bank.
According to the international organization, this measure represents the highest approval of housing units at once, which marks an alarming precedent in the scale of urban activity in the region.
Türk warned that this massive increase is not an isolated event, but rather responds to a growing trend that seeks to extend and consolidate the annexation of Palestinian territories by Israel.
The High Commissioner emphasized that the proliferation of these structures constitutes a direct violation of international norms, weakening the possibilities of a peaceful and stable solution to the conflict in the area.
In his statement, the UN representative emphasized that the construction of these settlements is illegal and demanded the immediate cessation of these actions. According to the agency, the continued occupation and fragmentation of the territory not only violate the fundamental rights of the Palestinian population, but also aggravate political and social tension throughout the Middle East.
Finally, the international organization called on the global community to take diplomatic measures to ensure respect for the territorial integrity of the West Bank. The UN reiterated that compliance with international law is the only viable way to curb the trend of expansion and guarantee legal security for the inhabitants of the occupied territories.
