UNESCO confirmed the stability of the University City after a technical tour of the UCV

The regional director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Anne Lemaistre, took a technical tour of the University City of Caracas, where she found that the damage caused by the double earthquake of last June 24 was punctual and did not compromise the integrity of the architectural complex, a World Cultural Heritage Site.

This was announced by the ambassador and permanent delegate of Venezuela to UNESCO, Ernesto Villegas, who accompanied the visit together with the rector of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV), Víctor Rago, and other university authorities.

Villegas indicated that during the day, the UCV authorities presented a balance sheet on the effects recorded on the campus, the structural evaluations carried out and the actions taken to address the contingency.

In addition, he recalled that the University City of Caracas is one of the three Venezuelan assets registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the Canaima y Coro National Park and its Port of La Vela.

Villegas stressed that the inspection confirmed that the damages “do not compromise the integrity of the architectural complex, the greatest work of the master Carlos Raúl Villanueva”. At the same time, he highlighted the joint work carried out between university authorities, specialists and State bodies to preserve this heritage.

He also noted that the visit left a positive impression on Venezuela's technical capacity to respond to the emergency. “The regional director of UNESCO has the best impression of Venezuelan professional capacities for contingency management and offered to reinforce them with the cooperation of that international organization,” she said.
