The Governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal and Australia recognized the State of Palestine this Sunday, September 21, two days before the start of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, when they planned to hold it.

In this regard, the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, announced this Sunday that the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine, an important change in his government's foreign policy.

In a video posted on social media, Starmer stated: “In view of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution.”

“That means a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state; right now we don't have any,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that “the time has come” for that recognition.

For his part, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, published a statement through his account on the social network X, to express that his country “recognizes the State of Palestine and offers its collaboration to build the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel”.

In addition, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, made a statement in which he recognized the Palestinian State as “part of an effort to reactivate the momentum for a two-state solution that begins with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages held there.”

Also representing Portugal, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, stated in New York: “Recognizing the State of Palestine is the fulfillment of a fundamental, coherent and broadly agreed policy.”

Portugal defends the two-state solution as the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace that promotes coexistence and peaceful relations between Israel and Palestine,” Rangel told reporters.

The SWI portal notes that the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, spoke after announcements from the United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal and Australia, assuring that they constitute “an important and necessary step to achieve a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy”.

He added that this decision will pave the way for the implementation of the two-state solution, “allowing the State of Palestine to live side by side with the State of Israel in conditions of security, peace and good neighbourliness.”

The president stressed that the priority is the ceasefire, the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory, the total withdrawal of Israel from the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages and prisoners, the beginning of recovery and reconstruction, and the end of the settlements and of settler terrorism.

After the awards, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, absurdly promised to “fight, both at the UN and in all other spheres, against false propaganda” directed at his country and against “the calls for the creation of a Palestinian State, which would endanger our existence and serve as an absurd prize for terrorism”.
