The special envoy of the President of the United States Donald Trump, Richard Grenell, has expressed his support for diplomacy as a mechanism to reach an agreement with the Government of Venezuela.
During his speech at the Political Conference for Conservative Action (CPAC) held in the Paraguayan capital, Grenell indicated that he met with the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, the Telesur agency reported.
“You will always hear me as someone who advocates dialogue. I went to see President Nicolás Maduro. I sat across from him. I have expressed the position of America First. I understand what you want, I think we can still reach an agreement, I believe in diplomacy, I believe in avoiding war,” he said.
The official indicated that the White House has non-military mechanisms to manage bilateral relations. “There are a lot of tools that the U.S. government can use from the peaceful side before we have to transfer the file to those who are ready and equipped to go to war,” he added.
For his part, President Maduro warned of possible armed action in the Caribbean. During the inauguration ceremony of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace, he denounced the attempt to force a change of government in Venezuela through an intervention that serves the interests of the United States.
