The president of
the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, said on Monday that
the country is moving at a decisive pace towards a process of legal renewal in full
respect of human rights.
“Venezuela is
in a process of legal renewal, always trying to improve and
update our legislation for a total guarantee of respect for human
rights,” he emphasized during a working meeting with the prosecutor of the International Criminal
Court (ICC), Karim Khan, held at the Miraflores Palace, in Caracas.
In this regard,
he reiterated that the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, approved
in 1999, has “the most complete chapter guaranteeing human
rights”, which placed the South American nation “three steps
ahead of many in the world” in relation to safeguarding the
fundamental rights of the population, according to a press release from the Presidential Press.
“Now we have
decided to take another step in the face of a totally different world situation in
order to be prepared to combat the threats of today's world and
to be able to meet the demands of a new democratic model,” he said,
while stressing that Venezuela continues on the path of “building our
own model in every sense.”
The head of state
noted that the working meeting held with Khan is taking place at a “good
time”; and noted that Venezuelan institutions, particularly the National
Assembly, have “very good expectations” in terms of advice and
complementarity with the ICC Prosecutor's Office.
This is the fourth time that Khan has visited Venezuelan territory, after his visit in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Precisely, in Venezuela, the ICC Prosecutor's Office has special advisors to provide technical assistance, knowledge transfer and strengthen alliances.
