Venezuela and Japan review future cooperation plans

The Deputy Minister for Asia, the Middle East and Oceania of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Andrea Corao, held a meeting with the Japanese ambassador accredited to Caracas, Yasushi Sato, during which they reviewed the bilateral cooperation agenda.

The meeting, held at the “Antonio José de Sucre” Yellow House, focused on thanking the Venezuelan Government for the support provided by the Government of Japan after the double earthquake that occurred in Venezuela on June 24 and, in this regard, reviewing future cooperation plans in the area of risk management and reconstruction.

Deputy Minister Corao recognized Japan's experience in disaster management, valuing the importance of having her expertise in the current post-earthquake reconstruction process that the country is going through. The ambassador, for his part, confirmed the will of his government to continue supporting Venezuela at this stage.

After the natural disaster that most severely impacted the coastal area of north-central Venezuela, the government of Japan, through its International Cooperation Agency (JICA), sent shipments of humanitarian assistance, supplies and medical equipment. Also, the Japan Disaster Relief Medical Team, made up of personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, JICA and registered doctors, established a field hospital in Caraballeda, La Guaira state, for the care of the affected population.

In addition, an emergency grant in the amount of 3.5 million US dollars has been formally approved for humanitarian assistance channeled through agencies of the United Nations system.
