This Wednesday, December 4th, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Casabe an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during the 19th meeting of the Intergovernmental Convention of that body, held in Paraguay.

Among the spokespersons who promoted this initiative are the countries of Cuba, Honduras, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

In this regard, the Minister for Culture, Ernesto Villegas, stressed that Venezuela celebrates the recognition of the production and consumption of cassava, since “in doing so, we are recognizing the contribution of our original peoples, of our indigenous peoples, to the cultural physiognomy of our America that is moving towards cultural decolonization.”

He emphasized that “casabe means our America”, pointing out that this is a new achievement of the cultural diversity of Venezuela, since it is a food that has characteristics that go far beyond the very fact of its consumption, its production, and the ancestral flavors of the original peoples who resisted centuries of colonization.”

For his part, the president of the Center for Cultural Diversity, Benito Iray, pointed out that this is the 10th file that enters the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the thirteen that have been submitted.

In addition, he stressed that “this is the first time that a record as ours as the casabe has been recognized”, since the “yuca came out more than 2 millennia ago through the Orinoco River to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Honduras and to other Central American countries.”
