A team of approximately 20 Venezuelan researchers is working on the development of compounds for the treatment of cancer, said Michael Mijares, dean of Pharmacy at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV).
During an interview on the program “Al Aire”, broadcast by Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), Mijares stated that the project is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology (Mincyt) and focuses on the generation of molecules from natural ingredients and organic synthesis processes.
Mijares specified that, since the beginning of the initiative, chemical structures have been obtained that have been presented at scientific conferences at the faculty. The objective is to produce drugs in the country, from formulation to production, according to a MINCYT press release.
He added that the Faculty of Pharmacy operates production lines for compound preparations intended to meet specific therapeutic needs. In addition, agreements have been signed with the MINCYT to reinforce academic training and reduce graduates' time to enter the labor market.
He noted that the institute is also updating its curriculum to international standards, a process that began last year and continues with the support of the Academic Vice-Rector's Office and the Curriculum Committee. It is expected that a master's degree in Biotechnology will be added.
