Venezuelan women absolutely and categorically condemn the act of misogyny, racism and public degradation that occurred this Saturday, April 18, in Madrid, Spain, during a political event in which discriminatory words were used against the president in charge of the Republic, Delcy Rodríguez.
“We denounce it not because of political affinity, but because of principles. No ideological difference, no partisan conflict or any confrontation of power justify the use of expressions that humiliate women by resorting to sexist and racial stereotypes, disseminated in videos and publications of the event,” says a statement from the Venezuelan Women's Movement in Politics.
The letter points out that calling a woman “Mona” is not a political slogan. “It's aggression. It's hate language. It is a form of dehumanization that reproduces centuries of symbolic violence against women,” she highlights.
“Political criticism, wherever it comes from, opposition or ruling party, should never be degraded to sexist, racist or humiliating insult. Venezuelan women defend the right to dissent, denounce, protest and confront ideas or actions of any public figure, within the norms of respect. However, that right loses moral legitimacy when expressions of this nature are used,” he adds.
For this reason, women call on leaders, artists, activists, organizations and citizens to unambiguously reject all forms of misogyny and racism, wherever it comes from and is addressed to whoever it is addressed. “The defense of human dignity cannot be selective.”
It also indicates that condemning, as women, an insult does not imply renouncing one's political convictions; it implies, precisely, defending an indispensable ethical limit in a country that cries out for peace and an end to confrontations.
Indira Urbaneja, member of the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence; Iris De Franca, of the Venezuelan Women's Movement in Politics; and Asia Villegas Poljak, member of the National Assembly, subscribe to the statement.
