During the debate on Theme 15 at the 44th Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Venezuela welcomed the commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the Organization and reaffirmed its commitment to promote a process of institutional renewal, allowing this body to respond to the current challenges of global food security.
During the day, the Deputy Minister of Anti-Blockade Policies, Williams Castillo, spoke on behalf of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, reported the social network account of the Permanent Representation of Venezuela to the United Nations Rome.
Castillo confirmed Venezuela's support for a renewal process that would allow FAO to adapt to geopolitical transformations and respond effectively to current global food security challenges.
“We salute this institution that has made significant contributions in the fight against hunger, and which today requires reform processes to keep up with the times,” he said.
He also warned about the worsening of global food insecurity, whose structural causes such as armed conflicts, economic crises, interruptions in supply chains, climate emergency and unilateral coercive measures limit fair and equitable access to international trade.
In his speech, he also denounced the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza and pointed out the crimes committed against civilians during food distribution operations. “FAO cannot stand on the sidelines in the face of this situation,” he warned.
Venezuela also supported the declaration of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) and valued its active role in consultations aimed at defining strategies for the institutional transformation of the organization.
The Bolivarian Government called for an FAO focused on sovereign food production, nutrition as a fundamental human right, solidarity cooperation between nations and the integration of ancient knowledge with science and innovation.
