As part of a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening the national immunization strategy, a significant batch of 300,000 doses of Bacillo de Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccines, from the Federative Republic of Brazil, arrived at the “Simón Bolívar de Maiquetía” International Airport, in order to guarantee the protection of the country's boys and girls.

The supplies were received by the Deputy Minister of Collective Health Networks, Luz Rodríguez, who points out that this vaccine is of great importance, since it represents the first dose a child receives at birth.

“For Venezuela, this lot constitutes a significant achievement on the path to health autonomy, especially in a context marked by coercive measures,” he said.

He also explained that this reinforcement is in addition to the national vaccination stock for children under one year old, available in hospitals, obstetric wards and health centers throughout the National Public Health System (SPNS) network.

He also explained that meningeal tuberculosis, one of the most serious conditions that can be prevented with BCG, is one of the main focuses of this immunization day. “Consequently, this mass vaccination program not only seeks to reduce infant morbidity and mortality, but also to prevent epidemic outbreaks and prevent the collapse of health services,” he said.

Rodríguez added that rigorous logistics have been put in place, including adequate transportation from the airport to the National Epidemiology Warehouse, to ensure the cold chain that will preserve the effectiveness of biological agents.

He added that from there, national distribution will be coordinated, with access in vulnerable communities as a priority.

For her part, the National Director of Immunization, Nuris Valderrama, commented that “despite the blockade, despite the coercive measures, the national government is ensuring that every Venezuelan born in our country has their vaccine already guaranteed from the newborn scheme.”
