The Venezuelan Minister of University Education, Ricardo Sánchez, arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay, to participate in the Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Higher Education, convened by the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC).

“This meeting is not only taking place in a context of collaboration and academic exchange, but it is also infected with a deep historical burden, since it takes place on the same day that 200 years ago our patriotic forces triumphed in the Battle of Ayacucho, a historic milestone that symbolizes the struggle for independence and self-determination of our peoples,” said Sánchez.

In addition, as reported by the Venezuelan News Agency (AVN), he emphasized that the Battle of Ayacucho represents a legacy of struggle and resistance that inspires us to continue advancing in the construction of inclusive, quality and relevant higher education systems for our nations.

“The meeting is meant to be a space conducive to dialogue and reflection on the challenges and opportunities faced by education in our region, towards the construction of a sustainable and equitable future for all,” he said.

He stated that during the working days they will address issues such as public education and free access, university funding, employability, the University's contribution to innovation and technological development and a panel that will be addressed tomorrow on Governance in University Education systems.

“On all issues, Venezuela has successes, capacities and achievements to show in front of the region. We will talk about the truth about Venezuela, without neglecting to mention the effects of the blockade and unilateral coercive measures on university education,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed, on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro, his firm conviction that education is a fundamental human right and a powerful tool for social transformation.
