Venezuelan engineers make progress in creating an electroscalpel for veterinary use

A team of Venezuelan engineers, belonging to the National Center for Development and Research in Telecommunications Foundation (CENDIT), is working on the design and development of electrosurgery equipment for veterinary use, known as an electroscalpel.

Samuel Perozo, one of those responsible for the project, stressed that the initiative was born thanks to the approaches of the Cayapa Heroica National Plan, where brigade members travel to Venezuela to recover medical equipment that was damaged in the different healthcare and veterinary centers.

Perozo, according to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MINCYT), stated that these devices are usually imported, so “the idea was reached that we should, instead of continuing to import these equipment from abroad, start building them here to have greater technological sovereignty and to be able to fill these public medical centers that greatly simplify surgical operations.”

The specialist explained that one of the advantages of this electroscalpel, unlike conventional ones, is its cut by means of an electric arc responsible for cauterizing the wound on the spot, reducing complications during surgical interventions.

The design is currently in the testing phase to evaluate each of its functions and move towards a more robust prototype. Perozo stressed that the initial stage of the device is focused on veterinary use, with the intention of being handed over to the Nevado Mission to continue surgical procedures on animals.

The ultimate goal is to achieve certification in veterinary studies and then move towards the development of prototypes for hospital use and to provide health centers in Venezuela with domestically manufactured devices.

The engineer stated that the health sector will be favored by this technology, since this electroscalpel “simply makes these surgical procedures much simpler, less complicated”.

He also stressed that the production and assembly of these equipment will generate a positive impact on the economy through the employment of specialized labor in Venezuela.
