Venezuelan researchers evaluate marine fauna in mangroves in Sucre and Anzoátegui

The Institute for Advanced Studies Foundation (IDEA) evaluates the abundance, richness and diversity of fish associated with mangrove roots in the Mochima National Park, located between the states of Sucre and Anzoátegui.

From the Mochima marine research station, in Sucre state, researcher Argenis Castañeda stressed “that, given its importance as a breeding area and nursery for different species of fish, a record of their behavior must be kept”.

In addition, the specialist indicated that “these communities have been little studied (...) our intention is to evaluate how they are doing, because it is a strategic area for the country's fishing economy.”

According to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MINCYT), the fieldwork carried out by researchers involves recording data on fish abundance and sizes, with the purpose of managing appropriate technical, scientific and economic resources for their protection.

Among the species of commercial interest associated with these ecosystems, the cradle grouper (genus Mycteroperca), the corochorus (Orthopristis ruber), the parrotfish (from the Scarinae subfamily) and the barracuda (Sphyraena) stand out. In the same way, the presence of the snapper (Pagrus pagrus) stands out due to its permanence in the area, as well as the seahorse (Hippocampus), a species integrated into the evaluation due to its biological requirements for development and reproduction.

This underwater study seeks to contribute directly to the conservation and sustainability of natural heritage in coastal areas.
