Venezuelan scientific talent developed the project of Overpack-type Containers for Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (FRSD), presented at the International Conference on the Safe Transportation of Nuclear and Radioactive Materials, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria.

The information was revealed by the Minister for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez Ramírez, stating that this project “is not just cutting-edge engineering; it is a strategic response to the need for shielding and safe transport of sensitive material in our country”.

The ministerial leader explained that these containers were designed by specialists from the National Center Foundation for Development and Research in Telecommunications (Cendit) and the Institute of Engineering Foundation for Research and Technological Development (FIIIDT).

“To date , Venezuela has successfully collected, moved and stored more than 20 FRSD heads thanks to this nationally manufactured innovation,” Jiménez said.

He also added that “they are devices that require packaging to guarantee the safety not only of people, the environment, but also of the physical integrity of the discarded sealed source,” said Carlelinés Gavidia.
