This Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox (mpox) an international public health emergency.
The decision was due to the fact that 15 countries in Africa have high numbers of cases of the disease, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) being the most affected nation.
In addition, the virus has spread to provinces that were not previously affected.
So far, there have been 2 thousand 30 cases and thirteen deaths this year, compared to 2023 , when there were 1 thousand 145 cases and seven deaths.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by the monkey pox virus, a species of the genus Orthopoxvirus.
