The women's national softball team, led by the 2008 Olympic women in Beijing, María Soto and Denisse Fuenmayor, begins this Tuesday against the Philippines the fight to qualify for the final phase of the 2027 World Championship and remain in the fight for a place in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028.

This qualifying phase, which takes place from July 14 to 18 at the Villa María del Triunfo Softball Complex in the Peruvian capital, Lima, is one of the toughest in the competition, as it includes the Japanese national team, defending champion and four-time winner of the softball world cups.

Five games

Venezuela begins the battle against the Philippines this Tuesday, on Wednesday it will face Puerto Rico, on Thursday it will do so in a double round against Japan and Peru, and on Friday it will close against Great Britain.

Also competing in Lima are Puerto Rico, number three in the world, Great Britain (12), the Philippines (13) and the host Peru (18) team that hired the Venezuelan Olympic player, Yuruby Alicart, to lead the team and raise the competitive level in the tournament.

Every ninth will play a five-game league before the top four advance to the playoffs on July 18.

The teams that come in first and second place will face each other directly to determine who will get the first pass to the final phase of the 2027 World Cup, to be held in Redcliffe (Queensland), Australia, where not only will the title of world champion be at stake, but also another ticket to Los Angeles 2028.

The loser will get a second chance in the playoffs against the winner of the third-placed and fourth-placed duel.
