27 injured and more than 400 buildings affected after the earthquake in Panama

At least 27 people were injured and more than 400 buildings were damaged after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that shook Panama this Friday, while about 300 people were evacuated, as reported by the authorities, who so far have not reported fatalities in the latest report.

The earthquake had its epicenter near Tonosí, in the southwest of the country, and caused damage in nine provinces. While the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a magnitude of 7.7, the Geosciences Institute of Panama placed it at 7.5. Authorities also reported more than a hundred aftershocks.

The affected infrastructures include 142 homes, 188 educational centers, 20 health facilities, 26 government buildings, 13 churches, seven hotels and nine bridges, as well as roads and water treatment plants.

The provinces of Los Santos and Coclé recorded damage to homes, hospitals, schools and public buildings.

In the latter, eight families were transferred to a hostel and one of the towers of the cathedral of San Juan Bautista de Penonomé collapsed during the earthquake, when Bishop Edgardo Cedeño and several priests were gathered there.
