With the slogan “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, the 46th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) kicked off this Monday in the capital of Malaysia, marking the beginning of a crucial cycle for the regional bloc in a context of growing global uncertainty.

At the opening ceremony of the plenary session, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged member countries to strengthen regional integration and to respond collectively to economic and trade shocks, at a time of geopolitical tension and fragility of the multilateral system.

“Our peace, stability and prosperity have often depended on an open, inclusive and rules-based international order. These foundations are being dismantled under the force of arbitrariness,” Anwar told the leaders of the ten member countries.
