This Wednesday, some 70,000 doctors in the United Kingdom began the longest strike (of six days) recorded in the history of the National Health Service (NHS), with the aim of demanding decent salaries.

“We are not asking for any wage increase or restoration to take place overnight. What we have to do is start a path towards that and, especially, not deepen wage erosion, and that average increase of 3 percent would still have amounted to wage cuts for many doctors this year,” said Vivek Trivedi, the co-president of
the British Medical Association (BMA).

In this regard, the head of the BMA in London, James Steen, assured that the UK government is not willing to negotiate a fair wage.

“He fakes his desire to negotiate. There is no law of nature or statute that prevents them from speaking to us with called strikes. They spoke with striking lawyers 15 months ago. Nothing prevents them from talking to us except themselves,” Steen said.

According to what was published on the TELESUR web portal, doctors advocate a gradual wage increase of up to 35%.
