ACAV holds a practical day on cocoa cultivation in Barinas

The Venezuelan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ACAV) held a practical day on good agricultural practices for the cultivation of cacao on the plot of producer Darío Yánez, located in the Las Palmas residential complex, Barinas municipality.

The activity is part of the Training Program for Agricultural Teachers on Sustainable Cocoa Management and the Cocoa Scientific, Technological and Innovation Network, attached to the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology (MINCYT).

During the day, the participants observed the conditions of the plants and applied practices for the development of the crop. A visit was made to the production unit to identify types of plants and their phenological characteristics, as well as the presence of flowers and fruits. Maintenance pruning was also carried out to demonstrate the structure that the plant should preserve and facilitate subsequent agricultural work.

The fieldwork included the characterization of the soil by opening a trench to evaluate its profile, the collection of samples for tests of organic matter, acidity and texture, and the evaluation of the phytosanitary status of the plants, taking into account the presence of diseased fruits or biological agents that affect the harvest.

With this day, the ACAV articulates scientific training with practical experimentation and the knowledge of producers, promoting the direct application of what has been learned in production units according to the conditions of each territory. The initiative responds to MINCYT policies to preserve national scientific talent and guarantee the country's agri-food sovereignty.
