After a historic ruling announced last Monday, the Colombian justice system sentenced former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez to 12 years of house imprisonment for the crimes of procedural fraud and bribery in criminal proceedings.

According to New Granada media, Criminal Judge 44 of the Bogotá Circuit, Sandra Liliana Heredia, announced the verdict in which she also states that the former president must pay a fine equivalent to 2,420 minimum wages, representing more than 3,444 million pesos (about 830,000 dollars).

In addition, according to the media that had access to the sentencing document, Uribe was banned from holding public office for more than eight years. However, the sentence will not yet be executed, as the defendant's defense anticipated that he will appeal the ruling, so the case will go to the Superior Court of Bogotá.

In May 2024, the Colombian Attorney General's Office accused Uribe of these crimes, after Senator Iván Cepeda presented testimonies from former paramilitaries Juan Guillermo Monsalve and Pablo Hernán Sierra, who claimed to have met with Uribe during his term as governor of the department of Antioquia.
