The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) congratulated the Venezuelan people for a peaceful day of voting in the presidential elections held on Sunday and called for waiting until the counting of votes ends.

“We're going to wait for them to finish counting the votes. We have the information that the electoral body of Venezuela is giving the victory to President (Nicolás) Maduro,” said the president during his usual press conference.

AMLO asserted that Mexico's statement will be framed in the results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

“If the electoral authority confirms this trend, we are going to recognize the Government elected by the People of Venezuela, because that's what democracy is like. But we're going to wait,” he said.

In this context, he added: “I want to congratulate all the people of Venezuela because yesterday there was no violence in the election. The situation was very tense, I saw people on the street and I didn't see violent clashes,” said the president.

The first ballot showed an irreversible result in which the president, Nicolás Maduro, obtained 5 million 150 thousand 092 votes (51.2%) in the presidential elections, compared to 4 million 445 thousand 978 (44.2%) received by the opposition candidate Edmundo González, after counting 80% of the minutes.
