This Friday, the Anti-Fascist International vindicated the historic role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazifascism, on May 9, the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.

Through a statement, the organization recognized the more than 27 million Soviet martyrs, “whose sacrifice determined the course of humanity in the face of horror”, and denounced “the systematic attempt to rewrite history, to whitewash the executioners and equate victims with perpetrators, as part of the cultural war that seeks to justify the crimes of the present by erasing those of the past”.

Below is the full text of the document:

At the Anti-Fascist International, on the eightieth anniversary of the defeat of Nazism and Fascism, we raise our voices with the strength of history and an unwavering commitment to humanity.

May 9, 1945, marked a victory for the peoples, a conquest of collective sacrifice, resistance, militant internationalism and the heroism of millions who rose up in the face of the most atrocious project of extermination, supremacy and domination that humanity has ever known.

Today, eighty years after that foundational feat that marked a turning point in human history, we affirm with absolute clarity and unambiguity: fascism has not been completely extinguished. Their logic of extermination, their authoritarian drive, their contempt for life and their cult of absolute power continue to operate in that of the world system.

For this reason, from the Anti-Fascist International:

• We vindicate the historic role of victorious peoples, with special mention of the Soviet Union and its more than 27 million martyrs, whose sacrifice determined the course of humanity in the face of horror.

• We extend our active solidarity to countries whose contribution to the defeat of Nazi-Fascism continues to be denied or relativised by Western propaganda.

• We call on all social movements, political parties, popular networks, human rights organizations and struggling communities to turn this date into a trench of mobilization, critical reflection, and collective activation against the new forms of contemporary fascism.

• We denounce the systematic attempt to rewrite history, to whitewash the executioners and equate victims with perpetrators, as part of the cultural war that seeks to justify the crimes of the present by erasing those of the past.

From the Anti-Fascist International, we call on the peoples of the world to unite in the construction of a new anti-fascist victory, this time definitive, popular, plurinational and global, and thus to rid future generations who are aware of this terrible scourge that threatens human existence.
