The avalanche was triggered after a sudden downpour in the Himalayan mountainous region, causing the collapse of numerous buildings and sweeping away homes and businesses. Local and federal authorities are working against the clock to locate survivors under tons of debris and mud.

“The mud completely covered structures, reaching up to 15 meters deep in some sectors,” said Arpan Yaduvanshi, commander of the State Disaster Response Force.
