Attorney General Larry Devoe highlights objectives of Consultation for Criminal Justice Reform (+core issues)

The Attorney General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Larry Davoe, confirmed on Monday the importance of the Grand National Consultation for Criminal Justice Reform as a call for the justice system as a whole to be reviewed internally, to overcome challenges and challenges, with the objective of taking the necessary measures to guarantee the constitutional right of access to justice and due process.

During the launch of this Grand National Consultation, led by the president in charge Delcy Rodríguez, she stated that the two main objectives of this initiative are to build a shared diagnosis of the challenges, weaknesses and strengths of the criminal justice system; as well as to design a road map that marks the path to the future for a profound transformation of the criminal justice system.

He stressed that the team of the Presidential Commission for the Reform of the Criminal Justice System “will be deployed in all states meeting with all interested sectors”, receiving the different proposals and opinions of all those involved in the daily life and operation of the criminal justice system.

Devoe explained that nine main topics will be discussed during the consultation:

1. Criminal policy in 21st century Venezuela is adjusted, consistent with a model of democratic and social state based on law and justice, as provided for in the Constitution of the Republic.

2. Access to justice and citizen participation in the criminal justice system. How do we make instances of the system more accessible to our population?

3. Coordination, articulation and integration of the justice system. How do we strengthen that articulation proposed by our Constitution on the various actors that are, who participate in this process, such as the actors of the justice system?

4. Ethics, autonomy and independence, one of the mandates set out in the Constitution on the development and functioning of the justice system.

5. The guarantees of due process and procedural speed.

6. Efficiency and quality in the organization and operation of the criminal justice system.

7. The human talent of the criminal justice system.

8. The structural infrastructure, equipment and endowment of the criminal justice system. What concrete tools do we have to guarantee that access to justice that our people demand and to which they have a right?

9. Technological tools for access to justice. How do we make use of technology to facilitate access to the population and timely response by the various actors of the justice system ?
