A total of 1,440 kilos of charcoal were seized this weekend by the Special Commission for Addressing the Larense Semiarid Region, created by the Ministry for Ecosocialism (MINEC) in coordination with the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) and the Bolivarian National Police (PNB). The plant material comes from an illegal extraction of the natural forest located in the town of Arenales in the Torres municipality of the state of Lara.

The information was provided by Adolfo Paredes Bastidas, a member of the commission, who stressed that during a tour they took around the area, deforestation activities were detected in various sectors, in which vera, cuji, olive, curarí and uveda trees, among others, used for the production of charcoal, were detected in the areas of Las Lechosas, San Pablo, San José de los Ranchos, Sector 2 El Cementerio, Las Cruces, Las Peñitas and Los Yabos, reports a press release from MINEC replicated by the newspaper Último Noticias.

It was also known that these illegal deforestation actions were carried out without the corresponding authorizations for the occupation of the territory and the use of renewable natural resources, granted by the MINEC, and they violate current laws and regulations.

In response to these irregularities, administrative sanctioning procedures were initiated for offenders, in compliance with the law, with the objective of protecting and conserving the biodiversity and ecosystems of the semiarid region of Lara.

In the same way, Paredes Bastida highlighted that the seizure of plant material was consolidated, thanks to the work carried out by local experts on vegetation and current land use in the semiarid region of Larense.

It is important to highlight that these works are carried out by teams from Minec, the National Park Institute (Inparks), the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) and State security agencies, which included observation flights using unmanned aircraft (drones) and collections of tree species in the Espinoza parish of Los Monteros, in the Torres municipality, said Paredes Bastida.
