The Spanish government, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), deployed the Technical Emergency Response and Assistance Team (START) to Venezuela with the firm objective of installing and operating a field hospital in the areas most hit by the devastating earthquakes of last June 24.
The AECID reported that the humanitarian mission took off from Madrid to the city of Valencia, Venezuela, made up of a contingent of 64 professional cooperators, including medical and nursing personnel and logistics specialists, ready to intervene immediately in the field, Telesur said.
The international organization explained that the mobile medical structure corresponds to the EMT-1 format of the World Health Organization (WHO), which guarantees that the facility will be completely self-sufficient in its operation and will be able to provide critical emergency care, surgery and reproductive health services.
The official balance sheets specified the tragic impact of the earthquake in the country, which so far leaves an unfortunate toll of more than 1,900 people dead and more than 10,500 injured, making this European deployment a crucial support to alleviate pressure on the local health system.
