This Monday, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, resigned after seven months and left the country, amid strong anti-government protests that have left hundreds of fatalities and a major crisis.

Hasina submitted her resignation to the president, Mohammad Shahabuddin, in Bangabhaban at noon and hours later she left the country with her sister Sheihj Rehana in a military helicopter bound, according to some sources, to West Bengal, India.

The top commander of the Bangladesh Army, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced that an interim government will be formed to lead the country.

Waker-Uz-Zaman said, “The country has suffered a lot, the economy has suffered, a lot of people have died, it's time to put an end to the violence.”

He also called for an end to violence and assured that those responsible for the injustices committed against students in the context of the protests will be brought to justice.
